Laura Horsley, Fibre Artist
I am a self-taught fibre artist who specialises in needlefelting, based in Teesside, North East England.

I started exploring needlefelting as a hobby in 2021, although I have always been creative and had a dabble at other crafting techniques from a very young age. I started needlefelting as a way of gaining back some of my own identity when my son was moving into toddler-hood, needing a hobby that was easy to quickly pop away while I went to retrieve him from climbing up the walls (quite literally!). He is growing up so fast, and my love of wool is growing too! I now sell my art work and creations, currently developing kits, and can deliver bespoke workshops.

My family are very much used to woolly supply deliveries from the postman and the numerous 'work in progresses' around our home, with my needlefelting eloquently (yet strangely accurately) described as my "stabbystab".

I am inspired by nature, wildlife, and seasonal changes which hopefully comes through in my creations. I'm also passionate about supporting and promoting wellbeing, and sharing how crafting really can give people a lift in mood and sense of achievement.

Each one of my needlefelted creations is made using a range of barbed needles and fibres, repeatedly poking or 'stabby-stabbing' it into a 3D shape or onto a canvas. I typically use sheep wool in my creations, but have also incorporated other fibres such as alpaca, rose, cotton, bamboo, and silk. I also have started exploring the world of wet felting, combining it with needlefelting and embroidery, different materials, and even zippers to create unique art and gifts.
Because each item is handmade, and fibre often has its own idea on how it wants to end up, no two items I make are ever identical, giving the recipient a truly unique handcrafted gift.

I always check my suppliers to ensure the fibres I use are ethically sourced, ensuring all wool fibres are mulesing-free, and all dying complies with relevant standards and certification.
